The journal provides research and paper to increase awareness, consideration and analysis of issues in Teaching English as Foreign Language, and also promotes the interchange of ideas, and comparative studies in this field.

Abstract

Most of people like technology, especially for children even we life in needing technology the most era. Most of children think that study is the most boring thing. Demanded by the reason above, by using technology can enhance students’ interest to study. One of the appropriate technology is e-learning, using Eliademy. By using Eliademy, can also enhance students’ interest and ability in English. In using Eliademy as e-learning media only need personal computer and internet connection. Teacher and student have different account with different goal. Teacher prepares the course and the tasks that will be done by students. The students do the activity that is commanded by teacher. Students are demanded to read to complete the tasks. Students can also do discussion and seminar in some menus which are available in Eliademy.

Abstract

This paper explains about the use of reward and punishment to increase young learners’ motivation in learning English as foreign language in Indonesia. The writer discusses about procedure and advantages of reward and punishment. Reward is an appreciation given by the teacher to the students who can follow the lesson well and finishing the assignment. Meanwhile, punishment is a bad treatment that is given to the students who do not focus in learning process, do not care of their assignment, and have bad habit during the class. Reward and punishment can be given through verbal and non- verbal form (action). Kinds of reward are mimic, gesture, compliment or positive feedback, point or sticker, and present. Kinds of punishment are warning, memorizing vocabulary, decreasing students’ point, and moving students’ seat. Besides to motivate student, reward and punishment also make the students become more discipline and study harder than before.

Abstract

Writing this paper is motivated by the lack of effectiveness process of learning English in the field of Reading Comprehension capabilities. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the use of learning model Problem Based Learning in Reading Comprehension for increasing the ability of students learning English. Problem Based Learning (PBL) is a learning model that is based on the problem where students are asked to find solutions through investigation. Steps in PBL learning model consists of five phases, namely; (1) Phase 1shows the efforts of teachers to orient students on the problem or the material to be studied. (2) Phase 2 teacher organizes the students to learn (3) Phase 3includes the efforts of teachers to guide in finding explanations and troubleshooting of learning materials. (4) Phase 4 in PBL activities that develop and present work, teachers give students the opportunity to others to provide feedback or another answer. (5) Phase 5 shows the efforts of teachers to analyze and evaluate the process of solving problems or learning materials. After that, the teacher can give a reward in the form of awards to students who seem active in learning process.

Abstract

This research aims to see whether students who were taught by using Number Together technique had better reading comprehension than those who were taught by using technique used by English teachers in teaching reading which was called in this technique as conventional technique. The sample of this research was X IPA 3 as the experimental group which consists of 35 students and X IPA 5 as the control group which consists of 35 students. The data of this research was reading test (posttest) scores which were analyzed by using t-test. It was found that there was significantly difference on student’ reading comprehension of tenth year students who were taught by using Number Head Technique. The reasult showed that tcount was 8.73 and ttable was 2.00 in the level of significant 0.05 which means tcount was bigger than ttable. Finally, it could be concluded that the students who were taught by using Number Head Together technique had better reading comprehension thann those who were taught by using conventional technique.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out the students’ ability in translating phrasal verbs presented in sentences from English into Indonesian and the difficulties that they face in translating them. The population of this research was English Department students of Universitas Negeri Padang who registered in academic year of 2013 and the subject of this research was chosen using simple random sampling. The problems that were discussed in this research were how the students’ ability in understanding phrasal verbs through translating them and what difficulties that they face in translating phrasal verbs. The instrument used in this research was a translation test. The result of the research showed that the students’ ability in translating phrasal verbs was quite good, with the score 68.1. Based on the students’ translation test result, it could be seen some difficulties that they face in translating phrasal verbs. First, they tended to translate word-per-word and second, they tended to omit the particle of the phrasal verbs. Based on the statements above, it could be said that the students’ ability in translating phrasal verbs was quite good despite of some difficulties that they face in translating them.

Abstract

This paper explains about the use of the two-tier mutliple choice question to promote senior high school students' reading comprehension. This model of assessment is modification of the traditional multiple choice question. If the traditional multiple choice question provides a question with some optional answers, distracters, the two-tier multiple choice question' model provide an additional question. This additional question is asked about the reason why answering the previous question. This model is aimed to set up the students to be struggling readers. It is also used to measure students' comprehension in comprehend the text. It can be seen from the reason of the students.

Abstract

This paper explains about the implementation of using songs to teach English to young learners. The songs that can be used are popular songs for young learners. At the beginning of the activity, teacher introduces the lyrics that will be sung.  The lyrics of the song should be compared with the topic. The activity of singing a song can be followed by another activities which the activities can improve their confidence. There are some advantages in teaching English through songs like various activities in the classroom, fun, and alive, also the young learners be active and confidence. Then, songs can improve the young learner’s skill in memorizing new words and pronouncing clearly. Using songs as the activity in teaching English help the teacher to build an active and interesting class.

Abstract

The current technological and communication development affects almost all the aspects of human life, and one of them is in education. In English teaching, technological development has a positive impact; it is about teaching English through E-learning. In E-learning, there are a lot of media that can be used by the teacher and the students to support learning English. One of them is through online learning (teaching methods via internet). In online learning, using website can help the teacher and the students to teach and learn English through E-learning. School.duolingo.com is one of the websites that can be used by the teacher and the students as a media to teach and learn English. This website has interesting features that can increase students’ interest and motivate them to learn English. The teacher can also check the progress of the students in school.duolingo.com. Through this paper the author hopes that all teachers to be more creative in using media in order to increase interest and motivation of the students to learn English.

Abstract

This paper is aimed to discuss about the use of The Show Don’t Tell  technique which can develop students’ writing ability. In the beginning, the teacher explains the elements of descriptive text. Next, the theacher can use The Show Don’t Tell technique as an exercise to help the students develop ther writing ability.in this activity, the students will be divided into some groups which consist of ,at least, five students. After that, each group is asked to prepare the sheet that will be used to write after the teacher give a picture as a topic. The topic of each group will be different one and another. Next, each student in each group write a sentence which relates to the topic given. They will do this activity until the last member in each group. Before they submit the paper, the teacher asks them to check the correctness of their writing with their group. After applying this activity, it is hoped that students’ ability in writing descriptive text will increase and also can get their interest to write descriptive text easily because this activity is really fun.
